Our Instructors

Coordinator and Instructor: Craig Daniels
Craig Daniels is a graduate of Stanford University with BA in Communications with a concentration in Mathematics.  He has also received an ME in Ocean Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of Washington. He was trained in facilitating Math Circles by Bob and Ellen Kaplan at their Math Circle Institute at Notre Dame in July, 2009 and has returned every summer since.  He was also trained by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in 2010 and 2012. In 2010 he was on Portland Public Schools’ K-5 Math Curriculum Adoption Committee. He is currently working on his MS in Mathematics at Portland State University. He loves math and is looking forward to sharing his love with eager students.

Instructor: Kara Shane Colley
Kara Shane Colley studied Physics at Dartmouth College and graduated with a BA in 1998. She then went on to study Math Education and earned an MA from Teachers College in 2004. She has taught math in various places: back East at a community college in Upstate New York, at a middle school in Cambridge, England, and at a high school and community college in the Marshall Islands. She has been teaching at Portland Community College since January 2008.

Instructor: Iva Stavrov
Iva Stavrov is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Lewis and Clark College, where she has been teaching since 2004. She obtained her PhD in mathematics from University of Oregon in 2003. Her research specialty is in differential geometry and general relativity. In 2012, she was chosen Lewis and Clark Teacher of the Year by the students. Iva comes from former Yugoslavia where she was a regular participant in mathematics competitions; she was a member of the 1993 Yugoslav Mathematics Olympiad Team. She has been involved in Math Circles since 2014.
